Student Extreme Hardship Fund

This fund assists NMHU students experiencing a significant, unexpected emergency which financial assistance can help ameliorate.

Examples are students who need to travel to attend a family funeral, are in an accident, or have a health crisis. A one-time award of up to $500 can be made from the fund to help students in need due to a catastrophic event.

Each case will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis with appropriate documentation required.

Since this fund was instituted in January 2018, we have supported students through sudden job loss, natural disasters, loss of parents, murder of a sibling, and the federal government shutdown.

Our NMHU students don’t only view us as faculty and staff. To some we have become their family when they are away from home.

“Over the course of my employment at HU, I have observed students who were faced with unforeseen or extreme situations and often wondered how we as a campus family could help them. Many of our students are from out of state, or out of the country for that matter, and have no access to financial support during a crisis. I began researching ways in which other colleges and universities were addressing this issue.

Hence, the Student Extreme Hardship Fund was born! The Fund was established to help provide financial assistance to students who face financial hardship due to a catastrophic event. Students have been ecstatic to learn that this type of assistance is available. Those who have received assistance are extremely grateful for this initiative and I am elated that NMHU can help.”
