2017 Fred Bleil Golf Tournament

A letter from from the Bleil Golf Tournament Planning Team:

Greetings Cowboys, Cowgirls, Alumni and Friends,

We hope this letter finds you and your loved ones, Healthy and Happy.

It is that time of the year again: Winter, cold and snow, if you live in the Mid-West or East coast.  Out in the Wild, Wild West, we are in shorts and t-shirts.  However, we will miss the moisture during the long days of summer.

It’s time to start thinking about Golf! The 6th Annual Coach Bleil Memorial Golf Classic is just around the corner and the planning is in full swing. We need your help to grow this!  This years’ tournament will be held at UNM South Championship Golf Course, on Saturday July 8, 2017.  Entry fee is $200 per person ($175 if you register by the early bird date of June 1st).   UNM South Course is annually rated in the top 100 public courses in the United States, hosting prestigious tournaments including the Men’s and Women’s NCAA Championships. It is a very challenging course so bring your “A” game, and for those of us-with no “A” game, bring extra golf balls!  Hosting this year’s tournament in Albuquerque will allow access to more alumni in and around the Albuquerque and Las Cruces communities and golfers in general.  Early indications point toward our most successful tournament to date.  And this year, for the first time ever, we are planning a whole weekend’s worth of ABQ activities for the entire family in addition to the golf tournament!

This annual event, is our time to remember and celebrate the memory of a great coach, mentor and friend. Coach Bleil was a positive influence in our lives, and provided great inspiration and support to many of us. The 6th Annual Coach Bleil Memorial Golf Scholarship fundraiser is our way of keeping his spirit alive. Awarding a scholarship to a deserving “HU” student athlete will ensure his legacy lives on.

We have been building momentum over the last six years.  The current endowment is a little over $16.000.00.   We have set a goal of $15,000 this year.   Ambitious-ABSOLUTELY!  This is a realistic goal, in fact, we are confident that we can exceed it if we can get more alumni on board. Our ultimate goal is to grow the endowment to be able to award a full football scholarship. We are a long way from reaching our goal, therefore we need everyone to be involved and participate at their level of comfort.   Whether it is planning on participating in the golf tournament and the weekends’ Alumni activities (more on this later), or being a hole sponsor for $250.00, donating door prizes, items for the raffle, sending items that may be included in the gift bags, etc.   WE NEED YOUR HELP!!!!!!!!!

Let’s make this a team event, in which everyone plays a role in our overall success, no matter how small.  Please begin by forwarding this email and spreading the word to fellow HU Alumni.

On another note, Perkins Stadium is in need of new turf for the football field.  A fundraising campaign, spearheaded by the Highlands University Foundation, the “Home Field Advantage Campaign” is underway.  As players, we know the psychological advantage of playing on our own field.  We are planning on donating some of our proceeds, TBD, from the golf tournament, to this worthwhile campaign.  The turf at the Perkins Stadium is 14 years old.  The field is used by the football and soccer teams, as well as the two-time defending champion “Vatos” rugby team.  Additionally, the field is used for drills, conditioning and community games and recreation.  Our Alumni Association is on board and supportive of our planning efforts.

In addition to our tournament, we are planning a Home Field Advantage Campaign reception Friday, July 7th.  This event is hosted by Southwest Capital Bank and Mike Melton at the new, prestigious Huning Castle Southwest Capital Bank Branch in Albuquerque, and tournament participants and alumni are invited free of charge.  “Home Field Advantage Campaign” and HU athletics in general will be topics of discussion.  This event will be promoted in association with Coach Bleil’s Memorial Golf Scholarship Tournament, and benefit the Home Field Advantage Campaign.

In addition, the Highlands Alumni Association has invited us to come out and enjoy a night of AAA baseball at the Isotopes Stadium, as their guests-this is gratis, following a day of golf on July 8th.  The Isotopes’ Stadium is one of the top AAA facilities in the country, and the hometown Isotopes will face off against that ‘other’ Las Vegas – the Las Vegas, Nevada 51s – at 7:05p.  Fireworks will follow the game, sponsored by Highlands’ Rio Rancho Center.  Kudos to:  Dr. Theresa Law, Juli Salman, Louise C’de Baca, and the rest of the ladies working on our behalf in our Alumni office.

Since the golf tournament will be in the “Que” this year, we encourage everyone to bring spouses, significant others, friends and children, and for some of us, grandchildren.  The “Q” offers a variety of family–friendly activities; including shopping, visiting historic “Old Town”, a ride on the Tram-the longest aerial tram in the U.S., Bio-Park, Museum of Natural History, the Aquarium, the Zoo, and many other fun things to do that will be enjoyable for the entire family.  We will have our traditional farewell breakfast Sunday morning, location TBD.

Dr. Sam Minner, President of Highlands University, Athletic Director, Bob Clifford and our new football coach, Marty Fine, will be invited guests and will be participating in the weekends’ Alumni festivities.

The time to make travel plans is now, you have the information.  Let’s make this a Great Event, a wonderful time for fellowship and renewing past relationships from days gone by.

Athletically,

C. Spencer #4 (Q.B., before P.P.)
